The Vermont Historical Society houses over 25,000 objects relating to our State's history. Over the next five years all of these items will be digitally documented and placed in this catalog for public use. Items are presented in topical exhibits as well as categorical groupings. Description
Rectangular cap plate embossed with a spread eagle in the center. The eagle has an American flag shield on its chest and is holding a laurel branch in its right talon. Above the eagle is a banner with the words, "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and below the eagle is a laurel bow. The bottom right corner is detached.
Use
Cap plates were worn on hats by members of militia.
Context
Found embedded in a maple tree in Isle La Motte, Vermont, in 1884 by Captain William Montgomery.
